Ghost by Mystery Skulls

As Matteo's attention returned to reality he saw several students slumped to their knees. Many blinked away their bewilderment, familiarity seeping in as they realized their fight was over. A few others pumped their fists or punched at the air in victory. The mental wear and tear of the massive TILT kerfuffle was evident. For the most part, the students wore storm-wracked stares and satisfied smiles.

Bubba limped up to Kara's table. She rose to meet him from the bench she had collapsed across. Matteo could not hear what they discussed over the din of students gathering their wits and heading to classes, but both teens smiled as their brief exchange wore on. They shook hands. A few of the students near enough to hear chuckled at something Bubba said. Just as the laughter died down, Kara responded and set the students nearby tittering again.

A shout from the open area between the tables and the doors through which Bubba's forces had marched wiped the smile off of Matteo's face. Another student shouted from near where the goth kids had made their stand. Yet another rang out from the area where the theater kids usually practiced. The yard supervisor cleared a path towards the first outburst.

Matteo rushed to the strange pocket of students idly standing in a circle around the yard supervisor and a prone figure. He walked past the cluster on the way to his next class and noticed Johnny lying face down on the concrete. The yard supervisor was trying to clear students out of the way. She asked two of Bubba's boys to help her bring Johnny to the nurse. Matteo thought about going with him, but the call of class proved stronger.

If anything I'll only end up getting in the way, he thought.

Mel tapped him on the shoulder. "Thank you for the help," she said. "Dare almost had me there. Do you think Kara's going to be alright?"

"She seemed like regular old Kara after we came back. Johnny may have overdone it though."

"I don't think anyone else remembers The Royal. Everyone I've spoken with only wanted to talk about the battle."

Matteo gave a noncommittal shrug.

"Listen, you said you’ve seen something like that before? Someone going full TILT like that? Does that mean any of us can become servers?"

Again, Matteo kept his mouth shut. He gave more of a 'I have no idea what you're talking about and can we please change the subject because memories of the dead rocker are not something I want to ruin this mad influx of Hype' shrug.

Mel sighed. "Doesn't this worry you at all?"

Matteo said, "How much Hype did you get from the fight? I'm pretty sure I have enough to buy music to last me until next month."

Mel glanced away from Matteo, towards her fairy. She said, "One thousand three hundred and five Hype. I guess you're not that worried?"

"Nobody was hurt, right? Think of how fights went before TILTs were a thing. Pretty sure Johnny would have clobbered me again.
